One of the latest (from at least a couple of years, TBH) trend in modern website is custom CSS pointers, usually, this is achieved by replacing the arrow (and hand for link) pointer with something else, usually, a circle with some sort of animation effect when hovering links and clicking.

Even if it could look like an easy task replacing the pointer is a tricky one, especially when dealing with it in React.

How pointer replacement works in theory

  • Hide the default pointer (even if some sites keeps it visible)

While rebuilding a portfolio website we came up with the (commonly used in these days) idea to animate the transitions between the website pages.
We already had our project mostly ready (beside some minimal details), it was made in React using Gatsby as framework, we also were using Gsap for in-page animations and scrolling behaviour; so we needed something that can easily plug to a Gatsby powered website and that could take full advantage of GSAP animation, so that all the website animation got the same “feeling”.

After trying with Barba.js (I think it is the actual standard for page…

While rebuilding our site in React we chose Gatsby.js as framework. Our backend was on Wordpress and it looked to us that Gatsby was the right choice to switch to headless.

At some point we needed to refactor our works portfolio, in Wordpress our portfolio was made with custom posts stuffed with custom field (taxonomies, galleries, images…).

Although it was possible to expose custom post and custom field to GraphQL to be read by Gatsby, we decided not to code this part in php and move the whole portfolio (around 50 selected works) to a single YAML file, that Gatsby…

In one of our latest project, our customer asked us for an app to use as frontend for their product technical sheets. They already have the content and the user stored in a WordPress site (the content was using custom posts) and they did not want to move to other platforms, since it was too expansive to create a new backend interface to add data and users (for example if moving to firebase) and also because their team already know how to manage WordPress.

Other requirements was that the content was available only to registered and logged-in users (with access…

PLEASE NOTE: this article is an extension of my previous one, so the code shown here is only partial to this functionality, if you want to start from the beginning you can read from start at this URL: https://medium.com/react-native-playground/react-native-firebase-email-authenticaton-in-an-expo-project-2e413e9a4890

Following my previous successful attempt at developing a basic login app using Firebase and email/password authentication (see my previous story here), i decided to start to attach to this basic system, more login providers, since Firebase is well integrated with a lot of them i decided to start with Google sign in.

Expo offers two Google sign in API: GoogleSignIn (https://docs.expo.io/versions/latest/sdk/google-sign-in/)…

UPDATE: once you are done with this, read my “extension” tutorial on how to add Google Login to Firebase inside Expo project => https://medium.com/@popeating/react-native-firebase-adding-google-authenticaton-in-an-expo-project-2-ed20cb440732

On my journey on learning App development with React Native, I decided to try making a small and contained app that will service a unique task, a self-contained login system, that uses Firebase Auth using (at the moment) email/password sign-in method.

Even if the app is just a skeleton I tried to make it as complete as possible in terms of interface/usability, using react-native-paper components for the interface, enabling dark theme if supported, adding translation, and…

My name is Massimo Bottura and 23 years ago I opened in March ’95 Osteria Francescana in my own town Modena, 12 tables, a very small restaurant but with big dreams since the first day.
